Calum Smith has never met a challenge he didn’t embrace. The adaptable leader has held senior leadership roles at Airswift in Australasia, North America and Asia Pacific and currently manages 14 diverse businesses across the Asia Pacific region as managing director.
“I grab every opportunity with two hands, volunteering for the roles others did not want,” Smith says. “So far, every step in my career has been a valuable opportunity to grow, develop cultural and social awareness and learn more.”
Given the recent declines in oil prices and business investment in the region, Smith is most proud of his team’s efforts to diversify beyond Airswift’s traditional oil and gas market. More than 40% of all revenue now comes from new client segments and markets. He also cites his commitment to diversity hiring and inclusion as an achievement and strength. Thanks to his efforts, the team now comprises 70% local employees and only 30% international employees.
“By focusing on local talent, we have been able to reduce attrition and
increase employee engagement scores,” Smith says.
Corporate social responsibility is another one of Smith’s passions. His leadership team actively supports numerous charities including Relay For Life. In 2018, his team raised $20,000 for cervical cancer screening with the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation. But his biggest passion is helping his people grow.
“My primary motivation is to provide the vision, structure and environment for my colleagues to excel in their chosen craft. I am here to enable their careers and in turn achieve our business objectives,” Smith says.
