Drew Perry likes to challenge the norm and think of new ways to add value. As division president of InStaff, a brand of Plano, Texas-based BG Staffing Inc., he has had plenty of opportunities to do both.
For example, InStaff has rolled out a “coach and rookie” program at on-site clients. High-performing temporary workers will coach new temps during their first two weeks on the job. The coaches get a pay raise and wear a special lanyard and colored vest. The program reduced temporary worker turnover while providing the newer workers more support.
And when it comes to internal employees at InStaff, it’s about the culture where employees are rewarded for their hard work. “Internally, it’s creating a culture of fun where employees enjoy coming into work and have genuine interest in the lives that we impact every day,” Perry says.
It all began for Perry when a relative encouraged him to join the staffing industry. He owned an Allstate Insurance agency at the time. He joined InStaff prior to its acquisition by BG in 2013 and its subsequent IPO in 2014. InStaff provides commercial staffing, with 90% of revenue coming from light industrial and 10% coming from clerical and call centers. It has 13 branches and 17 on-site locations. Perry’s role has also changed over the years, starting in sales before moving on to branch management, area director, VP of sales and then his current position.
