April Hansen is committed to challenging the “that’s the way we’ve always done it” mentality. The innovative, high-energy nurse turned “intrepreneur” has brought a startup mindset, fresh approach and knack for developing high-tech solutions to her role at Aya Healthcare, where she oversees 4,000 clinicians on assignment throughout the US.

“My ability to connect dots that not all people see is a unique quality and strategic advantage,” Hansen says.

As executive VP, workforce solutions and clinical services at Aya, this disruptive leader is most proud of the many programs launched during her tenure, including Aya Scholars in 2018, the industry’s first clinical ladder and advanced education program for travel nurses.

Hansen also partnered with a major academic teaching institution to pilot a program which upskills and trains nurses to care for different patient populations. Her transformative efforts have not only had a positive impact on patient care by helping to alleviate talent shortages, but the careers of travel nurses who can transition into high-demand specialties.

She is also passionate about serving her community. She currently sits on the board for the Wisconsin Organization of Nurse Executives, shepherds a group called “Tri-City Rocks,” and with her husband owns two local restaurants.

“I believe in remaining open-minded about what the future holds,” Hansen says. “And perhaps more importantly, to remain rooted in gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced.”
